Long one of the best arbor displays in the county, the median strip in spring was a few blocks of gorgeous. A recent obituary for local resident Dorothy Rodgers (1922- 2018) noted that when Dorothy first came to Lancaster in 1958, “the view of blossoming cherry (sic) trees on North President Avenue convinced her of the beauty of Lancaster.” Unfortunately the display isn’t what it once was. Dogwood anthracnose invaded the U.S. in 1978 and infested 95-100% of dogwoods in many areas. North President Avenue was not immune, and other species were added as replacements, which diminished the display. Still, this avenue retains springtime charm.
