This weeping specimen, and others like it, make for one of the most impressive accent plants in Lancaster County and, indeed, North America. (Another fine specimen is at Tanger Arboretum, and two huge individuals are at Masonic Village.) This plant, 50-70 years old, attracts tree-climbing children whom property owners Becky and Fred Hofferth discourage. “The tree reminds me of a big bonsai!”, Becky said.
This amazing species is long-lived (one in Pennsylvania is 560 years old); can grow to 170 feet (not this cultivar, obviously); and is by volume the largest evergreen conifer in the Eastern United States (again, not this cultivar obviously).
