This medium-size evergreen has a very small natural range (Serbia, Bosnia) but is widely grown as an ornamental because of its strikingly slender shape and crown.
Here, two Serbs stand watch at the edge of President James Buchanan’s property. The taller of the two rises about 65 feet and has a spread at its broadest (its lower branches) of only 16 feet.
This amazing species can grow on a wide range of soils — whether acidic or alkaline, sandy or clay.
