161a Ginkgo Sentry Jpg
Conestoga Pines Park, 161 Pitney Road, Lancaster PA

This narrow, columnar cultivar is always male and thus fruitless (G. biloba is dioecious, with separate male and female trees).

Sentry matures at 40-50 feet (in contrast, the species can reach 100 feet), and its spread only reaches 15-20 feet (compared to the 108-foot spread of the co-champion ginkgo in Lancaster Cemetery).   Sentry thus makes an excellent street tree where vertical overhead space is limited.

This amazing species’ leaves turn golden yellow in autumn and then may persist for several weeks before dropping quickly together to form a golden carpet around the trunk.
