36b Sutter
General Sutter Inn, 14 East Main Street, Lititz PA

This excellent tree carving depicts early pioneer John Augustus Sutter, admirable as a settler of California, ignominious in his dealings with Indians.  Sutter lived in Lititz from 1871 until his death in 1880.

Update:  Sutter’s legacy had been celebrated in Lititz throughout the 20th century with ceremonies and other events.  However, in the spirit of the nation’s increased sensitivity to racism, GSI removed the 8-foot Sutter statue on June 18, 2020.
