The open, 21-acre Freedom Memorial Park has about two dozen tree species, most of which are native. These include Catalpa, American Beech, Red Maple, Pin Oak, Shagbark Hickory, White Pine, Hemlock, Birch, Honey- locust, Sweetgum, Crabapple, and Carolina Silverbell. One of the few non-natives is the Korean Dogwood with its interesting bark and attractive, edible fruit (other non-natives include Norway Maple, Katsura, and Weeping European Beech).
This collection, dedicated in 1991 as the Rutter Arboretum, would profit greatly from tree labels and perhaps a tree map.
