Franklin & Marshall College
Harrisburg Pike & College Avenue, Lancaster PA
Some 168 tree species and varieties live on F&M's 52-acre campus. The College's trustees designated the campus an arboretum in 2007, and the College has earned "Tree Campus USA" certification from the National Arbor Day Foundation. Some of its 1000 trees are more than 150 years old. Highlights of the collection include: (1) Hedge Maple (Acer campestre), among the state champions; (2) London Planetree (Platanus x acerifolia), 150-200 years old; (3) Franklin Tree (Franklinia alatamaha), extinct in the wild since the early 19th century; and (4) Hican (Carya genus), a cross between pecan and hickory. The campus further hosts an old, majestically towering Silver Leaf Linden (Tilia tomentosa)
that appears to be the largest in Pennsylvania.
