Abies nordmanniana 'Golden Spreader'
Dwarf Golden Nordmann Fir
Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum, 230 N. President Avenue, Lancaster PA (in the Dwarf Conifer Collection)
This bright gold variety of Nordmann Fir grows broader than high, and tends to burn in full sun. The cultivar -- which originated as a seedling in The Netherlands in 1961 (the species itself is native to the mountains of Turkey, Georgia and Russia) -- is actually more striking in winter than summer, when it may be a soft green. The plant adds only a few inches of height per year and maxes out at 3 to 4.5 feet.
This amazing species is virtually pest and disease free, and also is rarely browsed by deer.
